So I want to walk you through what actually goes into a building demolition with an excavator: how the process works, what has to happen before the machine ever shows up, what it costs, and how to avoid the mistakes that turn a simple teardown into a expensive headache.
What Is Excavator Demolition, and Why Is It the Standard Method?
Excavator demolition is exactly what it sounds like: a hydraulic excavator fitted with the right attachment (a bucket, a hydraulic thumb, a shear, or a hammer, depending on the structure) is used to systematically pull a building apart, section by section, from the top down.
It's become the standard approach for a few reasons:
Control: An experienced operator can take a structure down in a controlled sequence, which matters a lot when you've got neighbouring properties, fences, trees, or utilities nearby.

Material separation: As debris comes down, the operator separates it, wood framing, metal, concrete, and drywall are sorted where possible. This matters a lot for disposal costs and recycling.
Foundation and slab removal: Once the structure is down, the excavator (often with a hydraulic hammer or breaker attachment) removes the foundation, slab, and any below-grade concrete.
Debris loading and hauling: Material is loaded into trucks and hauled to a transfer station, recycling facility, or landfill, depending on what it is.
Site grading: The lot is graded and left level, ready for the next phase, whether that's new construction, landscaping, or simply a clean, usable piece of land.
A straightforward single-family home demolition typically takes one to two days for the mechanical work itself, with hauling and site cleanup sometimes extending into a third day depending on the size of the structure and how much debris needs to leave the site.
How Much Does Excavator Demolition Cost?
Costs vary a fair amount depending on the size and construction type of the building, but here's a general sense of what to expect:
Wood-framed residential structures: roughly $4-$8 per square foot
Masonry or brick buildings: roughly $7-$12 per square foot
Reinforced concrete structures: roughly $10-$18 per square foot
Excavator rental with operator (if priced separately from a flat quote): roughly $100-$250 per hour
